Here at Carcela.com we believe we know a thing or two about selling used cars our reputation is built around the unremitting quality of service we offer to leagues of buyers and sellers across the UK. However, some of our buyers - through no fault of their own - probably couldn't match the price of a 1990's works Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evolution, once driven by four-times World Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen. It sold at the Silverstone Classic Race Car Sale held at Silverstone on 27th July at almost double its original estimate.
Most of our Millenial buyers and sellers probably won't know who a Lancia Delta HF was or what a Juha Kankkunen is if you get my drift. Both were early 1990's Rally Royalty, while Kankkunen is still recognised today Lancia is a faded Italian brand no longer sold outside of Italy.
By todays standards the 2.0-turbo petrol engine that powered the Integrale EVO churned out 212bhp seems quite tame, back in 1993 it seemed like an enormous amount of power for a compact hatch.
But the Delta HF Integrale Evolution was a really special car that blasted aside the opposition during its heyday and when an original Martini Racing, Abarth-prepared spec Lancia was auctioned by Silverstone Auctions that special appeal wasn't going to come cheap.
A bidding war broke out almost immediately with multiple phone bids battling within the room, online and commission bidders, pushing the price well beyond its estimate within minutes. When the hammer went down the final bid had crossed £225,000 including buyer’s premium, £105,000 more than its lower estimate of £120,000.
