This is the monster raving lunatic of the VW Polo range, the Polo GTI R5. The four-wheel Pepe The Frog, mean machine has been specifically developed for customer rally sports competitions. Based on the sixth and latest generation Polo, the GTI R5 is a development of VW's experience and know-how acquired whilst winning four WRC Titles from 2013 to 2016.
Like the production Polo GTI – the Polo GTI R5 is powered by a transversely mounted 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo engine with direct fuel injection, which is perched towards the front axle.
This engine layout is sufficient to generate 272 hp and maximum torque of 400 Newton metres. A close-stepped, sequential, five-speed racing gearbox and permanent four-wheel drive allow for a 0 to 65mph time of 4.1 seconds.
In accordance with FIA regulations, it is strengthened with a roll cage and other safety components. The Polo GTI R5 will be homologated in the summer of 2018.
The first deliveries to customer sports teams and the first competitive outings are planned for the second half of the year.
If your name is Michael the Millenial then you definitely do not have the funds to buy this customer race spec car as it is expected to cost over £100k.
Michael the Millenial can expect a road going derivative, we contacted VW UK and they said: "go away".
